Michael Jackson dies in LA hospital (Copied from The Associated Press, Los Angeles, US)
- MTV Asia (Entertainment TV in Asia)
As had been known, Michael Jackson is the “King of Pop.” He had been knows even from generations to generations. He died when he was 50 because of the cardiac attacked, that is believed was told by the doctor because when Michael Jackson reached the hospital, there was nothing much that the doctors in emergency unit could do. Songs lovers, especially pop music lovers, should be pretty shocked and sad about the lost of worldwide “King of Pop.” (2009)
This is a shocking news currently especially for the music mania, where the news is spread all around the world. This example is taken from the concern of the Globalization of Mass Media. Basically Globalization of Mass Media can also means that issues can be send to another countries because the emerging of mass media. It is also can be referred as competitive process by which media companies attempt to acquire a larger share of the profits available in the international market, that can be expressed with what The Jakarta Post (Indonesian Newspaper in English language) in the article of “Michael Jackson dies in LA hospital “that is posted in June 26th 2009 edition, that is basically copied by the article from The Associated Press, Los Angeles, US. This can be happened because of the contract that is usually done for some period of times by both of the parties; therefore, whenever there is news that can be copied, both parties will help each other thus one party can have the same news as the other party in different country. Even just hours after the news was knew publicly, MTV Asia already broadcast the sad news in today’s (June 26, 2009) news.
There are some limitations in the global media export industry, because of the difference in cultural background, language, and government restriction (politics, economics); thus government plays a crucial role to limit and control what is flow to the country. Nevertheless there is also censorship agent in a country to see what is acceptable to be shown publicly and what is not; this censorship will depends with the culture of the country, background and history of the country itself too. In Michael Jackson’s death issue, there is no issue that needs to be censored from public; thus we can still know and well informed about the news.
The US has been the most dominant country to export media towards other countries. This can be shown with the success of Michael Jackson, the African American “King of Pop.” Although Asian has the fastest growing of media, especially in India with all the serials they have, but that does not take US position to be the most exporters. We already know Michael Jackson since we were young, even when he was still had the black skin color and his original African American face. This also still happens in nowadays condition; models, actresses, actors, singers from the US are usually easier to reach Asian market rather than Asian public figure(s) get accepted in the US.
The globalization of mass media also affects me because most of the films I watch come from the US, no matter whether it is a serial TV series and also all the movies. Although we already have our local channels and serial TVs and movies, I still watch those TV series and movies that are produced in the US although some of them cannot be accepted, if we want to base it with our cultural background. What about your view for it? Do you have other view for this issue?
Because of the inter-connectedness of the world, we are exposed to so many different cultures such that we now have the ability to discern which cultures are best suited for us.
ReplyDeleteOne culture defies all that. One culture transcends all others. The culture of Michael Jackson.
Thank you for mentioning him in your post.
MJ was one of the greatest singer ever in 1990s!!and it made me love pop music and also the dance that was hard to be followed and copied by me =P
ReplyDeleteoverall, I love MJ!! =)
The media does play a huge role in our lives. In fact, it was actually due to the media that i knew about Michael Jackson's death.
ReplyDeleteIf i had a choice, i would definitely watch US media programs over local ones. Despite the cultural difference, i feel that US programs offer higher entertainment value than local ones.
this can be called westernization also.. condition where the US thingy becomes trend and we usually 'have to' update ourselves about any news from them.
ReplyDeleteMichael Jackson had been the most successful pop singer and he was a talented individual.
ReplyDeleteI think, Michael Jackson, as we know, was also affected by media exploitation, he had changed his image from African American into something that we know out of ordinary.
I believe each individual has his/her own uniqueness, so why bother to change your image, MJ,,,
it was written in The Sun that MJ had only bones and skin in his body and yet buried in Islamic way.
I believe it is not only USA that the trend has to be followed, it is around the globe..
You're the greatest Mike. RIP.
ReplyDeleteanswering your question (which is also the title of your post),
ReplyDeletei think that its not only US, but its most of the western countries. look at how the culture in Indonesia got influenced by them :)
we often generalize 'western countries' as US, and it is also because of the media.
and about MJ, to be honest, MJ is not that significant in my life, so my first impression of his loss was 'huh? another dead singer, eh?' and realized on how great he was... after watching the news.
haha..I want to comment not only for the entry itself but also regarding to mich's comment where for me, personally, I am a huge fans of MJ and where when he passed away, I was not only shocked but I really feel lost because I just started to buy each of his album at the time he passed away. However, now I still doing my MJ CDs collection. Although collecting MJ's albums are not cheap, but I am glad if I can really get everything because for me MJ is the greatest influencer in pop music world. I am one of the singer in my country and where my singing is based and influenced a lot by MJ thus for me MJ really proved enough to the world that indeed westerns influence us a lot though the media. MJ is one of an example, the others are actually a lot, such as examples from the movies we watch.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I want to say that my life really being influenced by westerns cultures. But I cannot say that everyone has that feeling too.
talking about western influence to us, who live in the east of the world, is considered most influence in entertainment industry such as movies, music, and of course basket ball.
ReplyDeleteMJ was one of the sample that our life are influenced by western.
He was great just like Elvis Presley.
The success of Micheal Jackson worldwide is not just due to his media publicity. He does make good music. Publicity without talent would not make a person as famous as Micheal Jackson.
ReplyDeleteAs for celebrities and models from the US being more famous than asian celebrities, i can only blame the asian film market. Not enough is being done to promote asian movie stars to the global audience. Only recently have they stepped up such exposure. Whether it proves to be a success or not, only time would tell.
I personally watch mostly US Tv shows only becuase they actually are better than local TV shows. Plots are more creative, the variety of genre is greater, the characters tend to be more engaging and they tend to throw in philosophical undertones especially for the science fiction tV series. Local tv series genre seem to be limited to only comedy or drama. THe plot gets contrived and convulated after a few episodes and there hardly any clever undertones, symbolisms or hidden underlying themes.
I have to agree with Samuel. US produced entertainment for the commercial market is truly a lot more superior to that of other countries. This can be attributed to many factors, such as bigger budgets for bigger things, higher film production technology, and a much larger pool of creative talent.
ReplyDeleteIn SG alone, we lack greatly in all of the above, probably because we are a small country with few resources, and also entertainment is not SG's main focus. However, SG is currently making efforts to step up it's game in the media industry perhaps because they are coming to realize how impactful and influential a good media industry can be.
US does have a very powerful effect on us whereby we are so realiable on them for entertainment as well as various other things like fashion. It effects us such that we judge the local entertainment as compared to them. It is unfair judgement but because our minds have already been set to criticize according to their standards, we just cannot help it.=)
